1976 gl 1000 lack of power above 70 mph

Postby pablo63 » Wed Aug 31, 2016 10:19 am

Hello
I recently purchased a 1976 GL 1000 , the bike looks like new and had only 15000 miles on the speedo , the bike came with full documentation
and receipt for timing belt , water pump change in 2012 with 12, 000 miles , the bike hard starts and did not perform well , so I did valves set @ 4 thou , brand new points set at 14 thou , ignition timing ,
using static method ,new condensers ,new plugs ,the bike now starts easliy and will pull through the gears as it should , the problem is when up to cruising speed of 70 mph and I twist the throttle there is no response and the can feel the bike holding back and sort of bogging down , but will run smoothely at 70 mph ,just wandering if there is a problem in the carbs ,maybe plugged jets .the spark plugs
have the correct colour to indicate proper ignition .
Thx , Paul

Did you check the advancer mechanism underneath the points plate? They can get rusted and not operate.

yes , removed the points backing plate & checked the auto advance unit , it was working fine and gave it a spray of wd-40 , also had by-passed the filter with a direct line to the pump , have since replaced with a new filter , have run the bike with the gas tank cover off to make sure the cover was allowing a equalising of pressure
