78 tank gauges - no worky - no lights - 7vquestion

Postby dogdoggybob » Wed Sep 28, 2016 12:19 am

Hi All

Ok getting back to this project. 78 GL.

I'm not sure the tank gauges were working/lit up when I bought it. They certainly don't work now....
I will freely admit elec. is not my thing. I do know to chk fuses and such but my knowledge is limited.
So...with that up front....
I am trying to figure out what/how power gets to the lights and the gauges in the cluster on the false tank. I have power to the aux box that comes out of the red plug that goes to the gauges, but nothing for the lights - which i assumed worked even if the gauges don't as in bad 7v reg.

I bought a 7v regulator to install - it was awhile ago. I'm a little confused on that front too. on the 7v reg it says white -12v in, green - ground, black - 7v out. I think maybe I got it from the classic Gl site. CRS syndrome!

the usable wires coming out of the back of the gauge cluster are white/red, green/blk, and green
those seem to correspond to the individual gauges.
Those wires don't quite correspond to the wires on the new reg. Is this where the thing goes? I replaced one on my 1100 and that was inside the speed/tach. cluster.
I am assuming it does cause there was a stock one in but I removed without noticing how it was connected.
the other thing.. the male connector on the new 7v fits (white) but the female connectors are too big. I must be missing something. I have a wiring diagram clymers/color.

the good news is I have headlights, turn signals, running light - no brake (yet). I have high beam indicator light but no neutral ( had it briefly but what?) The starter works.

thanks.

Not sure about the '78, but the 7v reg on early GL1000's is in the left side of the false gas tank, next to the reg/rectifier.

Maz,

the 7v for the 78 is behind the gauge cluster on the tank.
