Tire brand opinions

Postby 78wing » Wed Oct 05, 2016 7:35 pm

Any one tried either the Shinko Tour Master 230 tire, or the IRC Durotour RS-310 tire?
Front 3.50/19 (100/90-19)
Rear 4.50/17 (120/90-17) or (130/90-17)
Can't buy Dunlop 491 Elite II anymore in a 17" rear.

I have a gl1200, so different bike and tire size. I put on Shinko Tour Master tires this last spring, replacing the Elite II's that were on the bike. The Shinko tires are sticky but are wearing much faster than the Dunlops did. I'm fine with that, as I don't do a lot of long distance touring where tire wear is a factor.

Define "wearing much faster ".

How many miles you expect ?

My riding style is not hard on the tires. The Elite II set had a little over 20k miles when I replaced them. The Shinkos will likely not last to 10k miles.

10k is very little miles when you fig the tires cost like $300.

Are they worth the extra ?

I bought mine online on sale (Bike Bandit, I think). The pair was about $130 with free shipping, and I had a local shop do a carry-in mount/balance for $50.

BTW, where do you ski?

Or are you Polish and it's just a play on words.

Nope, not Polish. I used to ski a lot, up until the last couple of years. My wife and I used to make one or two ski trips out West each season. We went skiing in Austria for our honeymoon, back when we were young. I still ski locally in the Midwest, doing day trips. I'm 66 now, and my very arthritic knees will need replacement in the near future. I'm feeling good that I can still ride. My son and I took a bike trip around Lake Superior this summer, with no physical problems (other than being somewhat creaky in the morning).

Did the Austria thing myself a few times.

I hear you about the knees, is why I switched to a snowboard when I hit 50.

Twelve years and still going strong, most days.

What does skiing have to do with the original question, does everyone here go off topic and visit
with each other?
