misfiring &backfiring

could anyone steer me in the right directions working on gl1000 1979

I've not worked with a 1000 but would start with the usual: new spark plugs, fresh gas(no ethanol if available) with some sea foam added to it for starters. If its just backfires under rapid decelleration (rapid throttle closing), I'm sure there is some kind of air bleed system to lean the mixture that may need attention. Normal 4 cycle engine stuff like anything else. If its been sitting a while you may have to remove and clean the carbs. Could also be ignition problems. Good luck.

Misfiring and back firing could be anything from the carbs to the points. Go to Randal Washingtons site for detailed info on the gl1000.
