78 Gl1000 Down Shifting Problem

Postby Laura » Mon Sep 27, 2010 10:43 pm

A while back I posted to ask for help because bike once its really warmed up it will not go into neutral. I have heeded suggestions and tightened up clutch so there is very little drag and so on but it still wont. I finally took another persons advice and just deal with it. But now once it gets warmed up it will not shift down from 3rd to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st. It will eventually but I have to keep stomping on the shifter over and over and over. And sometimes it just simply won't go down to 1st and I am forced to use 2nd from a dead stop. Ive re adjusted clutch and checked oils and so on...anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

I rebuilt my 1000 and i had to repair mine for up-shifting problems.Down is the same.It was a worn paw(see pix).I drilled out the pin to remove the worn paw I had a few spot welds put on it then ground it smooth till it would operate the round shifting disk(with the pins in it).as you push the shifting lever down or up,the round disk will turn till it clicks on the detent.Mine would make it about halfway there.I used a short bolt and a lock nut to remount the paw back to the shifting arm.the whole assembly cannot be removed without splitting the case.the welding could be done on the block if you protect everything from sparks and ground the welder to the paw directly.use a dremmel to shape the detent.
All this is with the radiator removed and the front cover pulled.(see the service manual here)
I hope this helps,Virgil

It could also be a weak centering spring. When you trying to downshift, try lifting the lever a touch first, then press it into gear. If that works, the big sort of hairpin spring you see in the diagram above needs to be changed.
The problem with that is, to change it the engine has to come out and the crankcases split!

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

Thanks guys!!! Its dirt bike season for me so I just got settled back home and am going to tackle this now. I was kinda hoping for a simple fix but I think I get it and the diagram attachments are a super help! I've split cases and done work on much smaller bikes but this thing is a monster compared to what I've done....my bro is coming over so hopefully between the two of us we can get it!

Thanks Again!
