decode VIN #'s 1976 Goldwing GL-1000 LTD

Postby ibjasmin » Sun Aug 16, 2009 9:55 pm

I'd like to know how to find info on VIN #'s for '76 GL-1000 LTD.
Mainly, how to read the VIN code, the letters, and what the numbers stand for ( just like they have for cars).
Thanx

A lot of the older bikes didn't adhere to standardized VIN's, and can't be read like normal modern ones can.

I may understand your concern, as I believe them to be sequential in the 75-79 era.

I have two 1976 GL1000s. My naked GL1000 is serial number 7311, and although I've always suspected it to be in reality a 1975, all I can compare is the serial numbers of every other 76 I come across. My highway model is SN 21XXX, and is little different other than the WindJammer package.

A lot of the online VIN checkers want 17 digit VINs, and won't accept the old bike VINs. This one is the best one I've found thus far.

Your VIN will start with GL1-2 and the engine number will start with GL1E-2.
The 2 is for the second year of production for both. -1 for '75, -2 for '76 and so on.
This is only for the GL1000. It changes for the 1100, and again for the 1200.

Thank you 78AzWing.

That is a wonderfully concise explanation, and it makes sense. I have only seen the column on a 75 GL1000 one time, so I did not recognize a pattern.
