1975 GL1000 Wont Start After New Clutch Cable Help?

Post by skythepig » Sat Aug 26, 2017 9:07 am

Hi I have a 75 GL1000 Trike which was running just fine until the clutch cable snapped 6 weeks ago.
Bike was laid up until yesterday when new cable fitted.
Battery was fully charged. Engine turned over but would not fire up as usual just cranked over until after a good twenty or more attempts coolant started to be expelled from the expansion tank overflow? Never had this happen before.
Tried some more until battery too weak.
Battery charged overnight.
Tried to start again today but nothing just a clicking sound from the solenoid. No sound from starter.
After reading forum posts I disconnected the starter positive lead and connect a fully charged car battery with jump leads to starter and earth but nothing.
Does this mean the starter is fried? Or are jump start leads too big to use?
Also read about hydralock but am now getting confused as to where I should start looking to resolve this.
Can one of you knowledgeable members please advise how & what I should check from the start to try and fix this please.

Expelling coolant from reservoir tank while cranking sounds like head gasket.

To check hydrolock, remove the sparkplugs and hit the starter - the hydrolocked cylinder will expell its contents thru the sparkplug hole.

Hi thanks for the reply.
I have removed the plugs and nothing came out of cylinders so not hydralocked, but I am now confused.
The starter motor would only intermitently spin when connected directly to battery so removed it a took apart. Lots of carbon inside and some pitting so cleaned brushes etc and now spin up straight away, fitted back on bike.
Tried starting and turned over but would not start. Checked plugs and no spark? Rechecked all wiring connections and spark started.
Put plugs back in and engine turned over and even fired a couple of times but died.
Now will not turn over just makes a clicking sound at solenoid.
Direct battery connection to starter turns over ok so dont think its a starter problem, but if I reconnect it and try starting through ignition just a click from solenoid?
Not sure if I have some sort of wiring short going on as this is beyond my electrics knowledge.
As for the coolant coming out of expansion tank?????? thats another problem.
The bike was fully working until clutch cable snapped. Could bumping the bike to move it whilst it was stuck in gear with no clutch cause any of these problems....HELP?

Try jumping the two main terminals at the solenoid (Starter relay) with a screwdriver or something, possible bad relay contacts.

Hi here is an update on wont start problem. Not sure if bumping bike whilst in gear when clutch cable snapped caused all these problems.
Any way replaced starter solenoid with new one that was also faulty!!! Ordered another new one and this works ok, But starter motor failed again so bought a new replacement.
Still would not start, as spark was very weak on cylinders 1&2 so replaced points and then checked timing which was completeley out. Set timing as per haynes manual and bingo starts first time.
BUT now I have no headlight dipped or main beam, no indicators, no brake lights, no horn. Have so far checked the fuses and bulbs and they all look ok.
Where do I look next to solve the electrical issue?
