Slight Stuttering/Power loss 4-5kish Rpms in every gear 1978 Gl1000

Hi All,

New to Goldwings and motorcycles but not to the forum. You guys helped me solve some ignition problems and now the bike is running nicely on all 4. Link to the thread below in case anyone is curious. It also details what I've done to the bike thus far pretty well.
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=40457

So the problem I'm experiencing is that the bike has a hard time accelerating between 4 and 5k rpms but after I get past 5 or 5.5k I have full throttle response and power again. It kind of has a stuttering feel to it when it's going through those Rpms and it makes a kind of stuttering noise that sounds like it's coming from the right side near the valves. I know stuttering isn't the most descriptive word, but it's not a tapping, knocking or clicking noise so I don't really know how to describe it.

It's not super noticeable, but if I'm accelerating quickly through that range there's a definite power loss that kind of comes and goes in little waves that I've been calling stutters.
I haven't adjusted the valve clearances yet because I'm being lazy about buying the new gaskets for the valve covers but I will if that's what we think it is.

Anyone have any ideas?

I believe you need to pull the carb rack and give them a clean.

Sounds like the sliders are not slippery enough. They need to move really easy with no friction.

A little more diagnostic info for everyone:

So the bike needs to be choked at all times to idle. It idles around 2k rpms (according to the stock tach which I'm sure is wrong). If I drop it any lower by pushing in the choke, it eventually dies.

What I discovered is that the choke is causing the stuttering so now I just push in the choke when I get going and have to pull it back out before I come to a stop. Pretty annoying but at least I feel how powerful the bike is again.

Question: Does this give anyone any ideas as to what if any easy fix there might be? I'm pretty sure it means the idle jet circuit is clogged which means it's time for a randakk carb rebuild but was wondering if anyone can think of something simpler that might fix it in the meantime before I commit to the rebuild.

Thx!
Coleman

Try running some seafoam through it, won't hurt it and might help. If it don't the fix is obvious.

Don't worry about checking the valves because of the valve cover gaskets. The gaskets are rubber and are good for dozens of removal and re-use.

............depends. on these old bikes, they've had plenty of time to dry out. for the price, get another set before you take it apart (imo)

True...time and heat take their toll on those things. First time I did the valves on my 82 GL1100, the valve cover gaskets crumbled as I took them off. I had kind of expected this, and had new ones already on hand.

Got new gaskets and ordered Randakks carb overhaul kit. The time has come. Also discovers I broke one of the CV cap plastic bottons when tapping it to free the slide which I thought was stuck. Wooo I’ll be doing the jb weld + bottle cap fix.

Anyone know what tools I’ll need for Randakks kit? My toolbox is rather limited
