I hear talk about checking the slides to make sure they are not sticking, how do I go about doing that?

Taken at the question only..
I removed my air filter...stuck a small mirror on a stick in the bottom..rotated it around till I could see each slide..one at a time...Started the engine..rapped the throttle a couple times to about 4000 rpm and watched each slide bounce up and down....I did find that one slide stuck near closed...
This was the cause of my poor acceleration.
And yes I had just rebuilt and synced the carbs.
I also test the slide action on the bench nowdays with a shop vac to simulate the engine.

Running issues at low speed an idling. Idle in not returning to 1000 rpm but going up to 3000 an running rough at low speed.

OK, stuck slides will not cause an idle issue. Your carbs probably need to be synched.

Throttle cables adjusted too tight causing throttle to not return to idle, maybe?
They say 98% of all Hardleys ever made are still on the road..... The other 2% made it home.
(I stole this from somebody on another GW site...)

If those jets were aftermarket you may need to put the originals back in. I remember having one doing that though, the spring in the air cut off valve was too weak causing it to stay open. Try plugging the vacuum hose to the top of the valve.

Set the valves. Bet more than one is tight.

When the carbs are off, you can tip the rack and gravity is enough for them to drop if they are properly free. Your method is interesting and sounds like it worked.

Readjusted the floats today and check the valves again. Pretty sure the valves are ok but double check. I've done this before on a 02 Valkyrie an it's no fun on that either. Thought I had a cracked head or crack in cylinder. Turned out to be needing to be torqued down twice to get the head right. I had water in the oil from head gasket leak. I did a valve job while in there.

Ran the Wing today on the road. Idled good and ran up to speed. I had it running at 6000 rpms in third gear an it was pulling hard an smooth. It came back to 1000 rpm at idle just fine. Only problem was running rough at 20-30 mph in 4th. Felt like too much gas. Going to pull the plugs to see what they look like, think it's still running rich on gas. This is the first time it ran this good. Will try an fine tune it some more this week. Want to finish up on the engine so as to do the drive train and some wiring to clean it up. Sure love the looks of this naked bike.

To clean slides you polish them with jeweler cloth or crocus cloth..scotch pads from the kitchen will work too. you have to polish the inside and outside of the tubes..with spring installed and caps upside down if you bounce the slide it shoudld return quickly to about a 1/4" or so from the edge of the cap.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

Bear in mind that these engines don't like being 'lugged' in too high a gear. Nothing much happens below about 3000 rpm so if you open the throttle at 20-30 in 4th, it'll probably feel quite sluggish and even sound/feel rough.
