One Coil Fires

Hello,

I have a 76 GL1000 that I just replaced the coils on. I replaced the coils expecting to make the spark more powerful etc. After I had replaced them, I went to test the spark and only the 1 and 2 cylinder are firing off a spark. That means that the coil responsible for the 3 and 4 cylinder is not getting power or something. I cannot for the life of me figure out why it wont get any power. I traced the blue and yellow wire back and didnt find anything visibly wrong with the wire. I have spent hours trying to figure out why one coil works fine and the other doesnt seem to have any power. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

If you swap the coils, do cylinders 3 and 4 start to work? That will tell you if the problem is in the coils or in the wiring.

Yes it does work, the problem lies somewhere in the wiring.

Next step is to check the points or electronic ignition which ever you have. It all starts there.

Sorry for not being super informed, but where are the point that I would check. Are you talking about the stator? I am still trying to familiarize myself with this bike.

The points, or electronic ignition if it has been modified are on the rear of the left cylinder head. It is critical that the points be set correctly and is not easy for a novice to get right. The procedure is described in the service manual.

Do a search here for gl1000 static timing if you don't have a manual. There is loads of info regarding adjust or checking the points.

Here is a pic of the points housing on the rear of the left head as Dave stated. Each set fires one coil.
