GL1000 starter clutch/engine won’t turn over!

1977 GL1000 K2

Hi, I hope someone may have experienced this before, or may be able to shed some light.

My starter clutch was always noisey when the engine was running (listened by placing a screwdriver on the casing)

Last weekend while riding there was a clunk, engine stalled and wouldn’t turn over. On inspection the fixing bolt that goes into the shaft of the drive gear for the starter clutch had popped itself through the rear of the casing!

The bolt itself is solid, and will not turn. And therefore the shaft doesn’t turn either. I’m assuming something in the starter clutch or drive has broken, shifted, and is engaged via the chain to the main drive hence not being able to turn the engine over.

We are planning to strip over Easter holidays, however does this sound feasible? And does anyone have any experience of this?

Really good to find such a good forum, and really looking forward to hearing from you all.

Regards, Chris.

Love to see pics of that. Train wreck, but I’d look. I can’t imagine that happening.

I have heard of that. It is probably just the bolt wedged in there that is keeping the engine from turning. A suggestion I made actually worked. Hold the bolt with a wrench and turn the engine by putting it in gear and turn the rear tire backward. That should cause the bolt to screw back in and dislodge. Then maybe all you will need is a new plug.

Thank you for your comments so far.
It would be nice if it is something like this!
