New guy..
Hello all, new member here. A hero from my youth, an unstoppable, “Indiana Jones” type is now 83 years old , with the problems associated with a dynamic life, and advancing years. I dont get sentimental about machines, but this one is linked to a dear friend. Last week he called to ask if I would be interested in his 79 Goldwing and a 75 GL parts bike. The runner has set for ( at least ) two years.....
.... I’ve got’em home, they are rough!!.... but have potential. No concourse stuff here. Striving for a “runner”. I’m all in on this project. I’m selling a 65 triumph to fund the wing project . Hope you folks are patient cause I’ll have questions....
.....thanks.....

Hi and welcome, from a cold and snowy UK.
You're gonna have hours of fun (and a few of heartache) with these wonderful machines. You've definitely come to the right place. You're probably already aware, but make sure the timing belts are replaced before running the engines 'in anger' . Oh yeah.... The carbs WILL need stripping and cleaning.
Ask any questions and they will be answered.

Thanks.... Had thought about the single carb approach but after reading up on it will probably engage the four carbs . I’ll get the timing belts. All advise is good advise, that guarantees nothing will be overlooked.

Re: New guy..
Okay, Honda service manual doesn’t address this,, the weep hole underside of motor. (On a car I would say it’s for engine coolant to seep when waterpump is failing.) My bike is dripping oil out this hole . If anything it seems it should be coolant. Any ideas ??

I’ve got a new waterpump on order from our local Honda dealer.

There are 'O' rings on the pump body. Likely these are dried out/damaged.

Re: New guy..
Thanks, evidently oil OR coolant can leak from this seep hole. It will be
Interesting to get a look inside and see how it was designed.
.
I’m thinking I’d better move the bike into the heated portion of my
Shop. Things are getting rather involved

He is probably one of a handful of the best GL guys in the world.
He also sells some of the best parts you can get for your GL, especially for the carb rebuild.

Rest assured these carbs work very well except when stored for years without proper prep. Used every season, they are trouble free for me.

Re: New guy..
Thanks Fred, good to know. My bike starts but doesn’t respond well to throttle input . I’m sure there is a rebuild needed. These appear to be complexed units. I’ve rebuilt single carb bikes with good success , but they did not have all the intricate jetting and passage ways the GW does. Thinking about getting a harbor freight ultrasonic cleaner , four carbs would justify the purchase.......( in my mind atleast).....
