Here's an odd wiring issue......any thoughts?

Hi Guys, new to the community. Trying to restore an old 78 gl1000 I inherited when my Dad passed away. Has been sitting since 91. Done allot of work on it to get it road worthy and am on the last stretch......so I thought.

Here's the deal. It has:
- original Dyna III ignition
- replacement wiring harness (chased for shorts)
- Vetter Fairing (wiring double checked and spliced in)
- rebuilt turn signal switch/cleaned up

The issue is,

When you turn the right flasher on, the bike shuts off. As if the cut off switch has been used.

This only happens with the right signal. When the left is activated or when in the neutral position the bike runs fine. Regardless of it running or not all flashers, headlight, tailight work good.

Also, weird, when you pull the fuse for the tailight it shuts off as well!!!

I really appreciate your insight into these old bikes.

Any thoughts?

This sounds like the power wire for the ignition is tied into the lamp circuit (which is hot with the key on)rather than straight to switched ignition from the ignition switch.
That funny lighting module is involved in this circuit.

I think the ignition is tied in to the right front position light circuit.

Without looking at any wiring diagrams any thought that the ignition may have lost a ground connection somewhere and is finding some ground via the hot side of the right turn bulb filaments, which would be OK if the right turn signal was off. Ignition Current through the bulbs would probably not be enough to light the bulbs. But that ground route wouldn't be viable anymore when you put 12v from the flasher to the filaments...

You could test this by pulling the right side turn signal bulbs with the engine idling. If it dies.......

I agree. Weird electrical problems are usually traceable to bad grounds. And light bulbs have been used for grounds, so it is definitely a feasible issue.

certainly consider an issue with the reserve lighting unit. They have been responsible for quite a few issues.
