Re: kick starter
1977 was the last year. A 1978 engine block was new that year and the kick starter was gone. It can be added back in by usage of the 1977 cover.

Re: kick starter
Then either your engine was changed or you didn't have a 78.
Unless someone added it.

Re: kick starter
Kick starters are dangerous anyway. The only time I have ever tried to start my 76 with the kick starter was once when the battery died. It started on the very first attempt. I was so startled that I jumped back, tripped over the front wheel of my 1500 and landed on my butt. Not sure what I was expecting. LOL.
True story.

Re: kick starter
thanks for the confirmation on the engine year. I bought the engine because it had about 170 lbs. compression on each cylinder, but the rebuilt carbs that are going on it are from a '76 and I understand that the cam grind is milder on the '78 engines so will that be a problem? If so , I have '76 cylinder heads that are good and I could swap the heads or could I just change the cams and rockers? One more question, will a dyna coil electronic ignition from a "76 fit the breaker point housing on a '78?
