GL100 Starter Issue

Post by davedwards411 » Sat Apr 14, 2018 5:59 pm

Hey there, I'm not a mechanic but I'm dying to get on the road with this old Goldwing. Any help would be appreciated. It's an 81 GL1100. When I bought this Goldwing it had a starter issue. When I tried starting it the first few times I heard a loud noise and after looking around I found that the back cover to the Starter Clutch had popped off. I dropped the motor and pulled the cover off and found that it had backed itself off. I bought a new "Starter Clutch Gear" and replaced it and put the new one on. Put the motor back in. I also replaced the starter and got a new battery. After doing all of this it cranked and was idling fine. I got it into first and was about to pull it out of the backyard but it stalled out. I tried to crank it back up but I just heard a loud pop. After looking into it the new starter had shorted out and it appeared to be seized up so I took it apart and found that it had shorted out and the gears had stripped out in it. I replaced the gears from the old starter and put it back together. Then I found the stater solenoid had gone bad, jumping the starter I could get it to turn the engine over with the spark plugs out. The starter was still under warranty so I just sent it back for a new one and ordered a new solenoid. After replacing both those parts it cranked right up. I took it out and actually got it on the road this time but after bringing it back and letting it cool down I tried to crank it again and I heard that loud pop again. The same thing had happened to the starter and the solenoid is broken as well. Any idea why the bike keeps going through starters and solenoids? Thanks for the help!

I have a theory, I always wondered what would happen if the cams were timed 180 out from each other so that both the front 2 then the rear 2 fired at the same time. Could be you found out.
You posted this in the 1000 sub forum BTW, not that it really matters.

Seems it would lope like a V-Twin, but I can't see that bothering the starter any.... Starter has enough OOMPH to push two cyl past compression at the same time.

Bet a 6 Cyl with a cam 180 out would be interesting..... Would work on a 1500 but the 180-out side on an 1800 probably wouldn't fire too good, injectors squirting at wrong time....
They say 98% of all Hardleys ever made are still on the road..... The other 2% made it home.
(I stole this from somebody on another GW site...)
