front tire sizing

Post by gfrench5@hotmail.com » Fri May 04, 2018 2:13 pm

Hi guys, Weather is getting nice and I'm late with new tires. Both are Shinko Classic 712. The back is OK and installed on my 1976 Sulphur Yellow Wing 130/90 by 17 but I bought a 110/90 by 19 and have not installed it yet. Should I have got the 100/90 by 19 ??? Will the 110/90 fit ?? I'd rather not pay shipping charges to return it if it is OK. What are all your thoughts??? Thanks in advance, regards Glen French.

Shinko specifications for each of those tires are:

100/90x19 has an overall diameter of 26.1 inches and an overall width of 3.98 inches
110/90x19 has an overall diameter of 26.81 inches and an overall width of 4.29 inches

Recommended rim width listed by Shinko for both those tires is exactly the same, so no discrepancy there. The load rating is a tiny bit higher for the 110/90 so that's a bonus. Basically it amounts to the front tire closing up about 3/8" of clearance under the front fender and closing up about 1/8" on either side of the tire between the sidewalls and fork legs. Your speedometer will be slightly more accurate with the 110/90x19 I would bet. I've done exactly the same change of going one size larger front tire on two of my other bikes and it's been an improvement in my opinion. One is a 1000cc and the other is a 1340cc so I'm talking big street bikes, not little lightweight motorbikes. You will have to do some measuring and make your own decisions about what is acceptable for your classic big old Goldwing. Hope this information is helpful to you.

On an 1100 with a 1000 front fender a 110 will fit but it is pretty close to the fender. less than 1/2" of clearance but it works.

You're very welcome Glen. No matter what the Goldwing topic, you'll find that these guys on the GoldwingDocs forum are the best and nicest people to share advice and know-how about how to fix or service these old Honda's. Before I joined I read a lot of posts on this site after I got my 80 Interstate a couple of years ago and the collective knowledge and personal experience these great folks have convinced me this is the only place I want to be. I know my bike restoration will be a lot better because of this site and these members.

Let us s know if it fits. On an early wing it often rubs the forks with some brands of 110 19 inch tires.

Hi all, on the road and running well, slight oil leak at tach at fuel pump.....any ideas. Also the tach bushing is a little dry and slow any help would be appreciated. With the front tire I installed the 110 Shinko 712 on the front... it is tight but fits, the front fender clearance is possibly 1/4 inch. Next time I would go to the 100 because it looks more stock. I just used the appropriate tube for the tire size. Pics to follow. Thanks to all have a good summer, safe riding. Regards Glen French
