Ok.Key on,depress start button, headlight goes off(this is normal).Does the neutral light go off too?If it does you are loosing all power from the battery.Check the main fuse and the battery contacts and ground at the frame for corrosion. This is assuming the battery is OK.

Here is a pix of the common problem area for electrical. Also tend to the 3 yellow stator wires.they will corrode/melt in the plug causing charging problems.

It could also be as simple as a dead battery - it puts out enough power to turn everything on, but when you hit the starter button, and the starter tries to draw a ton of current, the voltage in the battery plummets and everything shuts off. When you let go of the starter button, everything comes back on.

Check your ground cable at the battery and at the frame. A bad connection here can cause the same symtoms you describe.

I also suspect it's a bad earth or positive connection somewhere. If you can put a voltmeter on the battery and press the start button. If volts drop below 8 volts the battery is dead, but I suspect the volt will stay well above 8 volts and it's a bad connection!! Difficult to find, but cheaper to fix :D

Hi, remove the starter from the electrical and connect it directly to the flashlight. Minus the skeleton, plus the cable is disconnected from the battery. If not spin the starter, got broken - broken off the electrics screw starter. The fix is easy, you only starter to dismantle, take apart and solder the copper wire from the back of the bolt starter, which is screwed onto the cable from the battery. Robert

Sounds like a dead battery. I get four years out of the old lead acid style.

one question that comes to mind. Is this a new-to-u bike? has it been started before. I know when i got my 77 it worked some and have had 2 problems that developed... first one is that button to start got corroded. And stuck a can of electric cleaner in the throttle housing and sprayed it good. Started making connection (will probably buy new one soon so don't have any issues with it). Also could be the starter relay. do you hear a clicking sound near the battery. if so the starter relay might need to be replaced. You could always try the screwdriver across the terminal trick to see if it works.

one thing i did not mention. why I said it could be a solinoid, the one I had would click and when I pulled it apart the metal bar that make the connection inside the solinoid to the two terminal post suppose to move an make a connection when the starter button in pushed.. melted into the plastic and was stuck.
