1976 or 1979???

Postby fueled88 » Sun May 15, 2011 5:46 pm

I recently bought what I understood to be a 1979 Honda Goldwing GL1000, but I noticed on the title that it said it was a 1976. Does anybody know where there is a tag or stamp on the bike that might clarify what year the bike actually is? It is a beautiful bike. All the suitcases are there and trunk and in excellent condition and it runs great. They say it is a limited edition "red" paint job from the factory...kind-of a maroon sorta color. Anybody know?

If it has just a fuel guage in the fake tank top, it is either a 75, 76, or 77. If it has more than one guage, it's a 78 or 79. Also, if it is maroon, and especially if the wheel rims are gold colored, then yes it is a '76 LTD. There should be a silver plate up front on the steering 'neck', but it might be fun to see/read without a mechanic's mirror. Others will no doubt step in here and provide more wisdom.

If it has a lever for the kick start under the right side cover and a hole in the engine to mount the lever, then it is not a '79. 1977 was the last year of the kick start.

Ok...I'm thinking I have a "chopper" Honda here. Here's what I have based off the information all of you have kindly given me (however I'm still lost somewhat when it comes to finding the right parts). The bike is maroon in color and has spoke rims...not gold but chrome. There are three gauges in front of the cover over the fuel tank (not one like seems to be on the 76-78 models) fuel, temp, and volts. The tag on the steering fork says it is a "1976" model, however I cannot seem to find a plug or hole for a "kick-start". And I do have the engine serial # which didn't seem to be in the chart one of you provided me. If you can make heads or tails of it...its "GL1E-4111354". Also I am having clutch issues. I had a new clutch installed because the old one would slip going down the road. However, now, I have a hard time getting the bike to go when the motor and clutch are cold. Start the motor, clutch into 1st, release clutch, nothing...give it a little gas and slowly she starts to grab. Drive it a mile or two to warm things up good, and I do 80mph in a 1/4 mile from a stop. Any clue? Nobody I talk to seems to know, and the question has been brought up whether or not the right clutch parts were installed for that make.

May be a FrankenBike.
The gauge cluster is what came on the '78-'79 models, so the fake tank has been changed.
Under the left side fold down cover, is there a fuse block and four reddish brown rectangular things in a holder? that would make the frame a '75-'77.
on the right side of the neck you should find the vin number stamped into the steel of the neck. That number will tell you which year it is.
I think the wheels have a different bolt count between the '75-77 and the '78-79 bikes on the brake rotors.

The frame is definitely a 1976...cross referenced serial #'s on that and it matched a 1976 GL1000 KO. after a little investigating, found that the side panels (and obviously the gauge panel) have all been replaced with those from a '79 model. The rear panels actually have a second key slot higher up than the original ones which are no longer used. I just need to figure out the right year for the motor, and I can't seem to find info to cross reference its serial #.

The GLE1-4 on the engine indicates a 4th year model engine. 1978

freeplay on the hand clutch is good...great spring tension in the clutch...is there another adjustment on it other than that on the handle bar?

If you take the air cleaner assm out, you will see an inline clutch adjustment if I recall correctly.

That is a throttle adjustment, the clutch cable runs down the right side of the frame either under or just to the inside of the right fake tank cover. The second adjuster is under the clutch cover just below where the clutch cable goes into the engine case at the right rear of the engine. Once the cover is removed you will find a headless screw with a lock nut. Loosen the adjuster at the grip as far as it will go. You want major slack in the cable. Stick your straight slot screwdriver into the slot, a wrench on the nut and loosen the nut a couple or three turns. Then turn that screw in until you just feel resistance. Then back the screw out 3/4 a turn, spin the locknut down and snug it while holding that screw in position. Now go back and run the adjuster at the grip back out until you have between 1/4 and 5/8 inch of freeplay at the grip lever. That is what the book says anyway.
