Charging Correctly?

Postby portugeezer » Thu May 19, 2011 10:13 pm

So I have noticed that every time I ride my 1976 GL1000 when I put it back in the garage and plug the battery tender on it is charging. Is that normal? On my 1994 Magna it is always fully charged when I do the same thing. The GL1000 runs fine but I'm afraid if I take on a long trip and don't have the battery tender it won't start.

In a word YES.On the gl1000,,It doesn't seem to charge much below about 1800 rpm..So when you settle it in for the night,it probably has discharged the battery some while your getting it in the drive,up to the resting place and shut down.Full electrical load at near a idle will take the surface charge off the battery.Another thing is a parasitic draw,eg.clock, radio gps etc.,can run a battery low in a week without a tender. The electrical system was designed to operate the bike with factory equipment ONLY.When other stuff is added, the charging system may not have enough capacity to run it AND maintain a full charge.So.. If the bike has an extra electrical load like lights, radio etc,you must compensate by reducing the load somewhere else, like using LED lighting. It's a balancing act.I tried to add 2@55 watt driving light to my 1000.Even at 2800 rpm it would discharge the battery. So when the driving lights were on I wired it to cut off the head light. The 1100 is better and the 1200 better yet(larger capacity charging). It's engineering designed to the minimum.

I did add a radio hmm? I'll get LED's for the 5 1157 bulbs in back I'll bet that does it! Thanks for the tip!

The 1000 barely has enough capacity to run the bike, factory lights and charge the battery under the best conditions. You'd be surprised how much 8 stupid little marker lights draw.It all adds up.Use a amp meter to determine what must be changed.
