Hi I'm new here but I'm thrilled to know there's a resource for these very cool machines. I just got a 78 GL1000 with 37k on it that had been sitting for awhile, they guy I got it from got it started when I looked at it but it seemed to need some tlc. I changed the oil & filter as well as the coolant and put some seafoam into the fuel system. The bike starts right up with the choke on but after it warms up for a few minutes and the choke is off the idle just sits around 2000rpm and I notice that the fuel pump just seems to be dumping alot of fuel into the carbs. The Rpms double if you pull the choke on. I assume my best bet is to remove the carbs and give them an overhaul but thought I'd see if I could get some feedback. The bike has a pretty smooth idle so I think the timing is pretty good but it's just too fast. Thanks for the help!

Idle adjustment on rear of carb assembly.Idle speed is about 950 rpm here's a pix.

How did you determine that the fuel pump is dumping excess fuel into the carbs?

So once getting the bike started I let it run for awhile with the choke on then when I pushed the choke back in the idle sat around 2000rpm I watched the fuel pump outlet line to the carbs and gas just seemed like it was flowing really quick for just idling, I definately green when it comes to these bikes so it could be normal, however looking down through the air filter without the lid on it looks like there is excess gas in the bottom of the intake. Not really sure where to start my diagnosis.thanks for your help

A float(at least 1 )is stuck ,there should not be any fuel in the plenum.
