when I first got my 77 going I would pull the clutch lever and it would click and become stuck in that position. what i had to do was take the cover off the back of the engine where the cable connects to the engine and put a spring in that mecanisim. its a lil tiny spring and a pain to get on but that fixed the problem. I used a real long screw driver to pry where the cabel connects to the engine back so the clutch would work again.. while ur in there you should do the clutch adjustment to the little screw in the middle. you will have to look at a manual to see how to do it.

From your reply, this is a 'new to you' bike. How long has it been sitting? The clutch plates on these can gum up and stick together with lack of use.
First get a manual and make sure the clutch cable isn't jamming and the cable adjustment is correct. Get some oil down the cable too.
Next, do an oil and filter change; fresh oil should help. Let the engine run for a good while to get it circulating.
Try putting it in gear (engine off) on the centre stand and pull the back wheel hard up and down with the clutch lever tied down.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

AFter you do everything Old Fogey says, you can try to rock it back and forth while in gear with the clutch all the way in (disengaged). I've had this happen on smaller bikes but never my GL.
