1978 Hot wire!

Post by musicminer » Sat Oct 01, 2011 2:16 pm

My 78 GL1000 was running fine, but suddenly some wiring in the area of the regulator started to heat up, enough for the insulation to start to smoke before I shut it down. Any ideas?

Check all wires going to/from the regulator and the three from the stator. I ended up hard soldering all my wires at these two points as corroded connectors are a big problem along the Gulf Coast. Since doing this, I've had no more smoking wires.

They're not just a problem along the Gulf Coast, they're a problem EVERYWHERE. These connectors are prone to heating and failure.
