Coil info help

Postby TheArtist » Wed Oct 05, 2011 1:43 pm

I just bought the Andrews 3ohm coil for my GL1000, 1979. It has electronic ingnition. It still has the orginal coils, and I wanted to update it and make it possible to replace the wire and boots. I have sent Andrews asking for installation instructions, no reply yet. Right now it does have the glass resistor.
What do I need to do, or add, or take out. I do not want to ruin my bike. Thanks.

At least with Dynatek, when you run the 3 ohm coil and electronic ignition the ballast resistor goes away (is bypassed). So that is what I suspect Andrews will tell you.

I recieved an e-mail back from Andrews that coil has a built in primary resistance, and they are for a CDI type ignition.

Let us know how she runs once you try her again. Your plug gap can now open up more, as newer coils have more energy. Randall recommends 0.32 to 0.35 gap with your set-up.

Hey! I have a set of Andrews 3ohm coils on my 77K (with an 836 kit). They provide a good hot spark as do most 3ohms. I also run GM auto points so I don't have a problem with the points getting burnt out. You need to be concerned with effect of the hotter spark on the standard Honda points. They seem to work well and my spark plugs show a normal burn. I cannot, however, provide you with any data measurements of the performance. But there are many very knowledgeable people on the forum that can give you good advice with regards to these electrical matters.
