76 GL1000 won't start

Postby Eribeiro » Wed Nov 30, 2011 11:41 pm

Alright, so my clutch cable snapped while riding and figuring out how to replace it brought me here....... sadly i figured out how to fix it from another forum. But it got fixed and i rode it to work (it ran perfect) but while at work it rained really heave. I know there must be something wrong because if she gets soaked she wont start. But i got off work and she didn't wanna start....tried to force her (had to take off to go get some rear) and killed my battery, fixin to get the battery charged, but any advice on why a little bit of rain melts my baby like sugar?

Check the cavity where the plugs are located. There is a hole at the bottom that allows water to drain out. If it is plugged you can clean it out with a piece if stiff wire. Also you can spray the coils and plug wires with WD-40 ( I hate this stuff but this is what it is made for) to displace any moisture.

If your ignition coils are 33 or more years old why they may be cracked. New coils is what fixed my rain problem. Dynatech is one excellent source.

Got a new dyna starter on it, i'll have to check the holes in the cavity out, any thing else it could be though? This just seams too simple.

If your ignition wires have cracks in the insulation it could ground out the park when it rains. You could test them by starting the bike and spritzing the wires with water to see if it kills the engine.
Good luck.

i have had my 2 wings for 32 years and its wet here in the uk ,my problem was the same ,rain caused the main bike one to go onto 2 cylinders , i ended up putting the coil into the glove box, it did not cause any problems,i just had to run extra long leads,,i know some owners might think this is a bit rough ,but it ran a lot better even if i dont go out in the rain or bad weather now if i can help it,hope this might be some use to you
