Postby timtanna » Sat Apr 18, 2009 4:05 pm

how do you adjust the float setting on a 1979,gl1000? my book isn't very clear in its pics. also the part of the float that pushes the float valve pin in, does it get adjusted and if it does how/what specs?

i am asumming you mean carb floats. i just rebuilt the carbs on my 78 gl1000 i used randakks kit and video, and according to him and honda you set the float to 21mm measured from the top of the float to the highest edge of the carb body, there is a small lip protruding up from the gasket surface that is where you measure from then bend the tab above the float needle to attain the 21mm. Also the carbs need to be mounted to the manifold and standing up almost straight up. the video shows it very well. and the stop needs to be set also so that the bottom of the float is level with the jet tower.

Hello Friend,

I was recently given a 1978 GL 1000 that was left in the bushes for 9 years. It's not as bad as it sounds, but I already took all four carbs off and cleaned them. I am in know way a mechanic , but I sold my classic 82 V CJ-7 Jeep and wanted another project.
I am in over my head but digging out slowly. I have read two different sets of instructions on setting floats. Your comment suggests measuring from top of carb edge to top of float, the other I read suggests top of gasket below edge of carb to bottom of float, which presume means edge closest to bottom of bowl? Please clarify which is the correct?

Thank you in advance.

When you turn the carb over to adjust the float, the bottom is now the top. I used a dial caliper to set the level. Randakk's has good suggestions.

Got it. So is the adjustment to the bottom of the rubber float when inverted or the highest point off the table. Can this be done on a workbench without intake manifold attached?

Thanks for your valued help.
