starter going or?

Postby D2D » Mon Jan 02, 2012 3:53 pm

Afternoon everyone, got myself an issue and could use a little push in the right direction.

I recently picked up another wing, a 76 GL1000 that has sat for a little bit. Previous owner did some work on it; changed timing belts and fluids, installed a new battery and solenoid and some other other minor stuff and got her running again. When I viewed the bike prior to purchase it would start right up by just pushing on the start button and pulling out the choke.

Now it has developed a starting issue. Pushing on the start button all you get now is the whining of the starter. It does no longer engage and spin the motor. Battery is fully charged and plenty of voltage to the starter ( 12v). I have even tried using the kick starter and it takes several tries before she'll engage and start. I've used the search feature here and on several other forums; but haven't run across a similar situation.

I'm open to any and all suggestions as this is the first time I've ever encountered this problem and I've rebuilt several old wings

Can you explain what you get when you use the kick start? Not heard of that not catching but never used mine. Sounds like a starter clutch issue.

Sometimes it "grabs" on the first kick and fires right up .. other times it's like freewheeling and the kick starter doesn't do a thing ; but after a few kicks it grabs and fires up the bike ..

Must be a nut loose or something, cannot say I understand the mechanism to give you a good answer. Hope someone else can chime in.

Thanks Guy, I'll give it a try as soon as it warms up a bit up here.
