smoking on start

Postby highlander » Fri Jan 01, 2010 9:36 pm

hi
I have recently received a 1978 GL1000 it has not run in 4 years, it has been in storage. I was told that when it started it would put on white smoke till it warmed up. It has 64,808 miles. I am going to perform a compression check on the cylinders as soon as I can get a new battery and I can crank the engine. As I have no manuals yet I need to know what the compression should be.

Any help you can give me as why it is smoking at start, and what the cylinder compression should be will be appreciated.

thank you and Happy New Year

You can download the service manual here (look on the "Manuals" link) and it will give you the compression numbers you are looking for.

Very good 160-175, above that needs decoke
good 145-160,
not so good 120-145, probably needs valves lapping in
poor anything below 120, strip down and rings probably.

Do not worry unduly if you find when you do the check that the readings are low when you have done your check. Rings will stick over time with sitting. Run it as is, get some miles on it first and then do your check. The readings will gradually improve with running.
If the white smoke disappears once it's hot, there's no loss of coolant and the oil has no water in it, don't worry. it is more than likely condensation in the exhaust system burning off.
If you're loosing coolant, you have a head gasket blown.

Can't emphasize this enough!
Do yourself a favour and CHANGE THE TIMING BELTS before you do any more running of the engine. These are interference engines, belts will take a set in them after sitting so long and if one goes you will be looking at a big bill at the least or another engine at worst!

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

Parking your GL1000 on the sidestand will often result in white smoke on startup. This is nothing unusual - unless the smoking continues after riding for a mile or so.

On the sidestand, engine oil will has a tendency to drain from the internal engine components and gravity feed into the combustion chambers of the left cylinder head, running past the piston ring grooves if they happen to be in the lower 2/3rd of the cylinder bore. And, sure enough, white smoke puffs from my GL's exhaust two out of three times that I park on the side stand for any length of time. This is why I use the centerstand anytime I park it over night.

Not just GL1000's...ALL of the Goldwings do this. Even the 1800's.
