It's magic. Or at least it seems like it. :)

There is a black box that connects to an angle sensor on the triple tree that detects whether or not the handlebars are straight. It also connects (if memory serves) to a small sensor inside the speedometer that sends pulses the faster you ride. That way, if it sees that you're riding over a certain speed, and the handlebars are straight, after a certain number of seconds, it shuts the turn signal off by activating a solenoid inside the actual turn signal switch.

Or at least, that's how it's supposed to work. On mine, and pretty much most of the other GL1000's I've heard of, it works that way about half the time. The other half of the time it will happily let the signals flash for ten minutes at 60 mph on the freeway, or will shut them off after 15 seconds while sitting at an intersection.

The one on my 1500 works quite well, on the other hand.

Also about the spedo. One model uses a reed switch mounted near the magnet on the rear of the spedo to send pulses to the cancler box,and one I saw used a photo-inturrupter circuit that sends a voltage(cancle trigger) when the spedo reached 25 mph.I think it came from a 81 naked. The reed switch was on a 83 interstate.
You would need to verify which one the control box used. They are not interchangable.

oh,, sounds like a pain to try and use it on my trike, ill try some other option if i can find one,,lol
if anyone has any suggestions it would help, im using switches from a harley on a custom built vw trike, so the neck area is all opened up and i havent done the wiring yet. Anything that will adapt to it without all the hassle of using the gl stuff would be great, speedometer was trashed, and im using a custom mini speedometer.

How about one of these....You could even operate it with your foot...
Sorry...I had to poke at you just a bit.
On you'r build, will it use a single switch for the turn signals or ,like some HD,2 switches. One mc switch near each grip?
Some things can be modified to an extent but it would end up needing something from the spedo to trigger it off.
The other option is just to add a timer to shut it off after 30 seconds or so.

Check out # 20 in signal cancelling,
www.badlandsmotorcycleproducts.com
They have several different models for diff bikes, the one im lookin at could easily work on a gl, its definatly alot simpler than the stock setup

Please help.

Yesterday I noticed that my turn signal cancel switch was not working anymore. During that ride, I also saw that the speedometer and odometer were also no longer working. Does anyone have any idea how to trouble shoot this?

Thanks

Turn signal auto cancel is directly related to the spedo.get it working first. Is it a cable drive spedo or electronic?

To be specific,on the bikes with a center push turn signal switch, when it does not cancel when the button is pushed I suggest the switch is at fault. When it won't AUTO cancel,it's related to the failed spedo. If the cable spedo quit, first unhook the cable from the wheel, spin the wheel and look see if the center coupler is turning. This will tell you where it's failed.
