NO POWER....NEED HELP

Postby emt613 » Thu Feb 23, 2012 6:51 pm

Hey Everybody here is the deal. In have an 83 Aspy, last fall I parked it due to a starter failure. Finally got around to replacing that and figured I would put a new battery in also. Got all that done,,,turned the key on and NOTHING,,,,,,,no lights,,,no dash board,,,nothing... Checked all the fuses I could find,,everything in the false tank fuse block tested good,,,,,,the DOG BONE is still intact. I am at a total loss here. Ignition switch feels kinda' mushy when you turn the key, not a crisp feel.Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree with the ignition switch,,,but ANY and ALL advice is welcome. Thanks and stay safe.

Using your test probe, test the red wire on the regulator. It should have 12 volts on it all the time.It goes to the main fuse and then the battery. While probing the wire, turn on the key and see if the volts stay on.It should. If either are not there, work your way back to the battery connection till you find the break.

Time to get a voltmeter out. Check first that you have 12 volts on BOTH sides of the dogbone fuse. If you've got power there, but no power at any of the fuses in the fuse block regardless of the position of the ignition switch, then it's time to start looking at the ignition switch. ALL power goes through the ignition switch before it gets to the fuse block.

And for the really obvious question................. Did you charge the new battery @ 2amps/hr overnight first? Is there actually 12v in the battery? I am not trying to be a smart azz, I have seen this happen before. I now return you to your electrical nightmare..............
Ride safe, Todd

KIll switch..on or off??? :)

Jiggle the key in the ignition switch if the switch is bad jiggling will usu sally get it to catch for a bit and then you know the problem.

Change out the dog bone for a blade type..they can look good but be bad..

I would test the battery first for 12 volts or more, then I would remove the neg. cable from the ground at the frame and clean it well then check the postive, cable. then try it..Sometimes it's just the simple things... I've been seeing ignition switches on ebay lately..

First off I want to say thanks to all who replied to this thread. ALL information will be kept on file in my not too trusty brain,,most of all Thanks to RoadRogue and Virgilmobile ? You guys hit the jackpot. The new fresh from the box battery was BAD. No matter how long it charged, we could only get 10.2 volts. When returned to the merchant where I bought it they tested for cold cranking amps. Supposed to have 200 +,,,,,it had 4,,yes 4. Was given replacement battery, Charged it over night and all is good. Thanks Again to all and stay safe this year. Can't forget you either, LITTLEBEAVER,, Roy
