Poorboy alternator conversion for GL1100??

Postby N2PPN » Fri Feb 24, 2012 8:19 pm

As I listen to the rain outside my window and hear of the possibility of thunder storms this evening (which for NYC/Long Island in February is unheard of) I got to thinking about the Poorboy alternator conversion which I had read about for the GL1200 using the single wire 50 Amp Denso or equivalent automotive alternator and adding a pulley to the crankshaft. And I wondered if anyone ever did a successful and esthetically pleasing poorboy alternator conversion on an 1100??

I have found a bunch of postings and articles on doing one on a 1200, but can't seem to find one for an 1100...

I don't need one yet (he says as he knocks on the wooden desktop nest to the keyboard) but would like to see what is involved in performing one on an 1100 and what the main differences between the 1100 and 1200 installs are...

Any ideas???

Rich

You are in luck with that question. It just so happens that I did just that conversion on my 82 gl1100 Aspy. I even put together a sort of "how I did it" post on the Steve Saunders site. I also just updated the info there after running it for the last two riding seasons, with over 30,000 miles on it. You can see the info here..............http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/vie ... 3366&forum ............... yes its worth it. 8-)

Todd,

All I can say is "you da man"!!!

The info/pics/write-up all have answered my questions and given me "food-for-thought" as I go back to enjoying the beautiful weather here in the North East... ( a little breezy today, but temps are almost 50 degrees out)

Thanks again for all your "pioneering" efforts on the 1100's behalf..

Rich man you have missed some post I guess, your too busy playing with that stereo you have  my Canadian friend here Todd is the man him and Dan Filipi have done the conversions, I'm on a list to receive a 4" pulley for my 1100, it's funny your posting because I'm install 6" pioneers to the fairing, I should be done with it tonight, can you recommend a amp, I want the stereo to be first rate..

Thanks guys...

Yeah I guess I have had my head in my helmet a bit much lately...

Littlebeaver, I looked at the PYLE marine amps (mainly so I wouldn't have to worry about moisture or water from an aggressive wash or rain) they have good RMS power and I think there is a model which puts out about 240 watts RMS into a 4 ohm load.... ( http://www.pyleaudio.com/products/Marin ... Amplifiers ) Check them out they offer a lot of options for the audiophile in all of us...

Todd, that's some excellent info on the alternator conversion, my electrical system is working ok for now (knocks wood, crosses fingers & toes, tosses salt over shoulder, etc...) but it sure is nice to know it's doable if my stator ever goes out :D

LB, nice job on the speakers, more pics, please!
