Front Brake upgrade

Postby t_reister » Fri Mar 02, 2012 12:20 am

I have an 81 Interstate and my front brakes leave alot to be desired. The bike has the single piston calipers on the front and they only work off the front had brake lever (not like the newer ones that activate one set with the foot brake). Wondering if any of you out there have put the double calipters from a later model on the 81 or if a simple rebuile of the calipers/master cylinder will do it. Have also read that braided lines help too. Help a brother out here please. Thanks!!

Yes. Lots of owners have installed the 82 dual pistons on their 81's. You have to switch everything, calipers, brackets and brake lines. Single pistons have a straight line where duals have angled lines. It would be a good time to upgrade to stainless steel lines. Might as well rebuild the master since you'll have it drained.

Paul,
Thanks, I figured that the newer stuff would fit. I'll start looking. Nice to hear from a fellow seabee, I was a builder for 6 years in the reserves, sorry to say I was never active Navy, but did end up retiring. Thanks for your service!!
