81 Interstate rear wheel creaking

Postby t_reister » Wed Mar 07, 2012 8:01 pm

My 81 Interstate has a "creaking" noise coming from the rear tire at low speed (less than 5 mph). Has anybody had this and what is it?? Wheel bearings or the rivets in the rim????

Sure seems like it would be something along those lines, i would check bearings first, maybe put it on center stand and turn it slowly in both directions and see what happens, try to feel it as you turn it for any roughness, kinda gritty feel, could be brakes ,bearings, caliper, rivits, final drive needing grease, lots of moving parts back there,, good luck with it and God Bless

You might want to check the gear oil level in your final drive as well.

If just turning the wheel off the ground doesn't produce the creaking,You could spray a little wd40 on the riveted area, then roll the bike at your 5mph to see if the creaking diminishes. This would only verify where the noise is coming from and NOT a fix.
******Does anybody know if they can be fixed or just replace?******

All the previous tips are very good, here's one not to forget though. Make sure the axle nut is tight .
If it were not tight enough it could make that noise.

Spray the shock bushes too, unless you are really sure the noise is from the wheel.

Everything above.but just one at a time. You wouldn't want to do all at once, you'll never know which one it was.

I learned diagnostic techniques from my Dad. :ugeek: With money tight and 7 kids,he never just started replacing parts till it worked, that was wasting time and money.
I hold the same ideals.Find the offending part and make it better....somehow.Either replace it or modify it into submission :D

I even go so far as to dismantle it to see how it works , sometimes even "repairing" things that some say can not be repaired.

Yup,did that with a loud ticking electric fuel pump on my 84.So quiet now,you have to put your hand on it to feel if it's working. ;)

I have checked the oil level in the final drive and it was ok, I had changed the rear shocks and the noise did not change. My new rear tire arrived yesterday and will change it next week (work prevents me from working on it this weekend). Will update you later.

Sounds good, but what about the creaking? Is it the rivets loose?

OK, sorry it took so long. Surprised I haven't been bashed by you all. Anyway, I took off the rear wheel, replaced the rear shocks, replaced the rear tire, checked the bearings for play and found none. Cleaned everything and reinstalled the rear wheel, torqued everything to what the manual stated. I also had drained the final drive and refilled it with 90 weight hypoind gear oil. I checked the rivets by tapping all of them with a small hammer, they all had the same noise so I figure they are all tight. There were also some nuts around the inner hub so I made sure they were tight, no torque specified in the manual. I greased the the fitting (8 pumps) just forward of the final drive. Unfortunatly, the wheel still creaks. Tomorrow, I'll WD-40 the rivets and see what happens. The bike has 48,350 miles on it. I also installed balancing beads in the new tire so I hope it performes like you all say in the forum. I am gonna replace the front tire as well. I'll let ya all know if the WD-40 changes the creaking. Oh, I also greased the splines on the rim where they meet the final drive before I installed the rim. Keep your finger crossed for me.

Just a point of interest.I found that using the grease zerk never got grease into the drive shaft coupler very well.I always removed the differential and hand lubes the coupler. The grease only just may work it's way down there.

I have taken the last step. I WD40'ed the rivets on the rim and it still creaked. Although, I went to the car wash to "de-WD40" my rim and after the wash/rinse the creaking stopped for the afternoon (yesterday). Today, it is creaking like crazy. I am pretty sure now that I need a rim. Anybody know who can rest the rivets?? I have a pair of rear shocks, air lines, valve, and pressure switch to trade.

Sounds like you got some soap jetted into the creaking part.Maybe pressure spray some wax in there. It might last 2 days. :D
As a last resort,If all else fails,I do have a 1980 rear wheel.I'm in Baton Rouge,so shipping UPS may not be too bad.
Got a front one too.
Tires are old,but The last time I rode the bike..10 years ago...it didn't creak.
The front wheel, rear wheel and differential are about all I have left of the bike.

From what the parts manual says 80's and 81's have the same rim. How much do you want for your rear rim???

1980-1983 parts manual from here states that the 80-82 can have the same rim.1983 uses the cast mag rim. There is a note about the 82 may also use a different one.Maybe the size?
So my 80 should bolt right up to your 81.
What parts do you want of it?
The rim obviously,The rotor is worn badly so I will remove it to lighten the load.
Do you want me to leave the tire on it?It has good tread but I bet it's hard and is at least 15 years old.
Do you want the differential? There heavy.Adds to the shipping cost.
****Check your tire size and I'll verify it's the same one.****
How about $20 plus shipping?

I have a 130-90-17 on my rim. All I need is the rim. I am gonna try one more thing tomorrow and I'll let ya know how it goes. I'm sure I need the rim. All my other parts seem to be in good condition. How shall I pay you??

Its the same rim, same size.I'm gonna knock out the rusted bearings and get the tire off.I'll pull the coupler to take several pounds of steel out of the shipping.I can get this done by Saturday and stop by the UPS store to price it.if it's reasonable I'll send it out then.don't worry about money till you get it and be sure it will fix your problem.Pm me with a a UPS address.we can settle on the gold later. It's not a pressing thing with me.

I really appreciate your help. Please send the rim via regular shipping, it usually is only a day or two behind the faster ones. Thanks again.
