Pad pins

Postby 19GoldWing83 » Sat Mar 17, 2012 6:48 pm

I'm trying to change the brakes on my 1983 Interstate. The instructions in the service manual say to remove the pad pin retainer and remove the pad pins. I got the retainer off, but cannot get the pins out. Is there a trick to this, or is there something else I'm missing? Please help!!!!

Use a drift pin punch to carefully drive them out. They are not hardened steel so if you hammer too hard or use too small of a punch they will deform. You can also use an old Phillips screw driver with the tip ground/cut flat. Phillips shank is perfect size for the pins. Be sure to clean and lube them when re-installed. Reason to be careful is if pins mushroomed from driving out pads won't slide freely.

It seems that at the end of the pad pins, on the caliper, there are two caps, one for each pin. Do those come off to push the pins out?

Here's a parts detail of your front calipers to help and provide, if need be a place to purchase replacements

I looked at my front brakes and I think these caps you are referring to are actually part of the pins. If I guess right these 'caps' are on the outside of the calipers? Right? After you remove the clip (from the inside of the caliper) you need to drive the pins out from the inside of the calipers. Hope this helps.

That's what I was thinking as well - the pins have a groove where the clip slides in to hold them in place, which gives the appearance of the pins having a cap. Just remove the clip and tap the pins out.

I sanded mine down with fine grit paper to remove all the accumulated gunk, then lubricated them with brake lube before reassembling.
