1983 Goldwing Front Brake Light not working

Postby fischerj » Thu Mar 22, 2012 12:18 pm

I get 12 volts up to the front brake switch. Could the switch be bad?

thanks,

Jay

Do the brake lights work with the foot lever? no=fuse, lamp out, wiring.
Do you have 12 volts leaving the hand switch when you apply the brake? Yes=wiring..no=bad switch(clean)
Does the switch go click when you use the handle? yes=mechanically ok(clean)...no=mechanically broken

Pull the two wires off the switch, and short them together with a paper clip or small piece of wire. If your brake light lights up, then the switch is the culprit.

As wingadmin says, never mind what voltage is there, if you short the two wires together, does the brake light come on? If yes then your switch is bad.. If no then you have a wiring issue and we can start to help you find it.

The voltage is there and shorting the two wires turns on the brake light. I can also hear the clicking so the switch is mechanically sound.
So I guess the switch is not working because of an electrical problem in the switch.

I looked on one of those OEM parts site and could not identify the switch. Can some one point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Jay

I am 99% sure I have one of those switches sitting around as a spare. PM me your address and if I can find it, I'll send it to you.

My front brake lever did not activate the brake light during last year's NYState Inspection. Messing with the wires got it to work and my mechanic allowed my bike to pass inspection, but told me to get it fixed.

I pulled the wires, took the switch apart, cleaned it all up, spray cleaned it, put it back on and it works 100%.

I'm the original owner of this '83 wing and have never cleaned that switch. 29 years worth of service and it was just crying out for a bath :-)

Yes it is a "electrical " problem in the switch.
Mechanically the contact plate is moving but the "volts" didn't leave the switch.
I have seen the contact pad burnt away causing this problem and replacing the switch is the easiest way to fix the problem.
I have rebuilt a pad with silver solder in a pinch, but it is very tedious.

Our Kind and Generous Wing Admin provided me with a switch that he had laying around. I installed it and it worked great.

I appreciate this site and our wing admin.

Is item #1 in the center photo what you are looking for? I can look around and see if I can find it a little less expensive.

For some reason the above link doesn't fully underline the whole link, so if you click it you won't get to the page you need. You must copy and paste the hole line all the way to include the 1982.
The 4th and 3rd two items from the bottom on this link may be your switch at a more reasonable price. I think the oem part number is there as well. Just check the side that the tab is on to identify which one you need.

It's because PartsnMore insists on using "[" and "]" characters in their URLs, which are reserved characters in virtually every online forum - meaning they can't have their URLs linked. I've told them about this numerous times, they either won't or don't know how to change it. Oh well.

You can get around it by changing the "[" to the URI-safe %5b and the "]" to %5d, like so:

There's really not much to it. One screw holding the old switch in - unscrew that screw, pull the old switch off, hook up the wires to the new switch, push it back into the same position, replace the screw. That's it!

From reading the title of the thread I thought you meant that you had front brake lights, I thought cool but why.

LOLOL

I am glad you got the problem fixed.
