Wires to turn signals on 1981 gl 1100I turned naked

Postby GL1100Newbie » Tue Mar 27, 2012 9:14 pm

I'm working on a 1981 gl 1100 I that was turned from an "I" to a naked bike. As a result, the existing main wire lead coming from the front of the bike for the turn signals ends just behind the gas tank. I plan to use turn signals with a convention bulb unit (not a LED or anything that advanced). Currently, there are no turn signals on the bike. Do I need to wire in any resistors into the extensions I put together to bridge the distance between where the main wiring harness ends and where ever I can mount the turn signals?

Nope,just follow the same color code.Even the auto-cancler should work.
I hope your taking pictures for us.I'm thinking of doing the same thing.Turning a interstate into a cafe racer.

Two way I know of..change out the rear taillight to a setup that had a mount for the turn signals......look at some pics of 1100 S's or attach to the top shock mounts by making a bracket that will set them back a few inches.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

I removed the fairing from my 1981 GL1100. Then, I found an original headlight/turn signal assembly. I removed the black plastic wire harness bucket/fairing weight holder and steel hardware to make way for it. Then I unplugged/cut off the part of the harness that went to the fairing. After I undo everything from the top of the outer fork tubes and slide the assembly down on them, I will have to figure out which 4 (There are 2 wires coming from each turn signal.) out of 8 or so single push in connectors in the remaining harness are the right ones for the new turn signals. Thats a lot of possible combinations. Does anyone know a quicker way to find them than trial and error? -littlebear

I'm getting ready to do the same thing to my Interstate (though I'm going to leave the saddlebags, so don't have to worry about that wiring) There's one 9 pin connector going into the fairing, which has all the connections for turn signals & headlight. So... once the fairing is off there will be this plug with all the needed connections. I bought an internal fairing harness on eBay, which I will make into a harness to connect to the lights on the forks & just plug into the fairing connector on the bike. That way it will be easier to put the fairing back on later.

Just waiting for all the parts to arrive (more eBay): headlight, mounting ears, turn signals, etc.

Here's the colors for the 9 pin connector:

Light Blue = Right turn
Light Blue/White - Right Marker

Orange = Left Turn
Orange/White = Left Marker

Blue = High Beam
White = Low Beam

Brown/White = Instrument Lighting
Light Green/Black = Accessory
Red = Constant power

(There's a separate Ground wire that goes to the fairing)

Hope this helps. Mark

PS: Does anybody know if the forks need to be removed to put the headlight mounts on?

Thank you very much for the color codes. That is a huge help. I am about to find out what has to be done to install the turn signals/headlight assembly, but the guy I bought it from said I have to do whatever it takes to remove the "lid" from the top of the forks and slide it down the forks; rubber grommets first of course. -little bear

I have a little bit of a different situation, if I may jump in on this thread?

a 79 GL1000, with Vetter fairing. I noticed my front turn signals/markers, do not light up when the handlebars are straight, but do light up when the handlebars are turned, either direction. I removed the side cover/ false tank cover and 'fiddled' with the wiring harness from the headlight. This is where I have a bare wire? or loose connector? I need to mess with it more but after diagnosing it to this point, i decided to look up on this forum if anyone else has had this problem?
I wondered if anyone can tell me the wire color/ schematic for the front turn signals or any advice

thank you

The lights need a ground to complete the circuit. Sounds like the ground is missing until you turn. Check the ground side of the lights.
