83 gl1100 top end speed

Postby Doyle E. » Sun Apr 01, 2012 8:13 pm

Just recently purchased this wing took out for spin to see how she runs. This was of course after checking all fluids. she would only run 80-85 barely. I would think these bikes should run a 100-110 top end. Does any one know if this is correct or if I may have some kind of fuel or carb problem? Also had to boost off to start surely, this doesn't have anything to do with its running. If so, any suggestions? All info appreciated

I have had my 82 up to 100mph with more top end available,I just dont need to go that fast. If you are running an oversized windshield that will slow it down. chances are it needs a tune up and a little love. Check the air and fuel filter first. With the air filter off use a mirror to see if the slides in the carbs are free to move when you rev the engine, check the valve clearences (stone cold) , make sure the vaccuum advance unit is free to move. That should keep you busy for a couple of hours.
Ride safe, Todd

Have checked some of the items you have mentioned, will check the rest tomorrow. Thinking in the same line as you maybe just a good tune up. Me myself, I don't ride that fast on a regular basis just if I have to. Friends have new 18'S that have a lot more power. Just want to be able to stay when they decide to speed up for awhile on interstates. Thanks A lot for the info.

Check the push pull throttle cables. My pull cable was broken when I got my bike. The guy said nothing was wrong but I knew there was. It only did 85 because the throttle could not open all the way.
thanks,
jeff

Excuse my ignorance, are you talking about the cables on the carbs or the main throttle cable?

There's two cables that run from the twist grip down to the carbs. One is the "pull" that pulls the carbs open when you twist the throttle open, the other is the "push" - its main purpose in life is safety - it will pull the throttle shut when you twist the throttle closed should the throttle spring and/or pull cable break.

Now the "push" cable can actually manage to push the throttle open somewhat if the pull cable is broken, but once the throttle gets open so far, the cable will just bow down on the throttle crank and it won't open any further. This may be what your problem is.

Watch the back of the throttle, and slowly twist the grip all the way open and closed again. Make sure the crank on the back of the throttle body turns exactly the same as the twist grip.

Mine will do 125 with no fairing or bags on it..not head winds and me flat on the tank.

But if you keep up with your 1800 friends you will run out of gas before they do..

HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,
RB
