83 GL1100A Backer Plate Removal Help

Postby jdconnel » Mon Apr 02, 2012 10:39 am

Just picked up my first Wing, and working through my maintenance list.
I will probably be posting a bunch of unknowns in the near future :)

First off:
Whats the procedure for replacing the left timing cover backing plate?
Mines chipped and I have a replacement. Need to do the timing belts anyways.

Also, I am looking for some 83 Aspencade parts, mainly dash / keyboard related... I will post in the "wanted" section.

If I remember correctly (going from memory here) you have to remove the belt, then the cam sprocket (the shaft is keyed, so you can't put it back on incorrectly). I don't recall whether or not you have to remove the crank sprocket, but I don't think so - I think both backing plates butt up against each other around the crankshaft.

Again, this is going from memory, I haven't looked at it in a while, so someone else might want to speak up to confirm this.

We're talking about #3 or #4 in this picture?

Looks like you just remove the appropriate belt & large pulley, then 2 screws and the plate will come off.

Yes, #4. Mines got a chunk missing.
Looked at the diagram. Wasn't sure if it truly was that simple.
