83 GL1100A Leaking Drive Hub

Postby jdconnel » Mon Apr 02, 2012 10:43 am

Noticed last night that my final drive hub is leaking a little.
I hear that's a common problem...?

I have also read to change the oil and convert to the lucas drive oil.
Potentially that can reduce the leak?

Any advice on what I should look for or signed that my hub is shot?

Thanks,
Jamie

The lucas stuff may work but only a temporary fix..the hubs don't wear out but the gear teeth can get worn if not lubed properly they should be "square" not rounded or pointed.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

i had same problem on 81 interstate-had second bike for spare-cleaned up rear hub-took out seal and o-ring and cleaned-and reinstalled-figured if it leaked i would rebuild first unit as o-ring and dust seal are hard to find-scribed locking ring before removing and put back where it came out- had awful time getting drive gear out of wheel-had it off 2 years ago, dont remember if i lubed pins-had to use 3 way pulled to get it off wheel-while cleaning wheel i noticed there was an o-ring missing that goes on wheel behind drive cog-i lubed pins with moly 60 and going to keep an eye on them-they are metal to metal and were rusted in- put back together-road it last two days and so far no leakage-using lucas hub oil straight up in rear-used tightening procedure from one of these web sites-axle first-drive hub second-then shocks and caliper-bike runs smoother and better on freeway
