1981 caliper front back same?

Postby jab2of3 » Mon Apr 02, 2012 1:50 pm

Hi,

I have the single piston caliper on my 81. It looks like the front left and rear are exactly the same caliper. Is this true?

Also, would the right front caliper work on the rear? The only difference is that the hose bolt and bleeder bolt are on opposite sides. I think it should work.

The problem I have is a very frozen piston but I have a right front caliper that works fine and fits. Any knowlede is appreciated!
thanks
Jeff

Any interchangeability is possible. No guarantee however.I've seen too many weird things to say 'you bet'

Personally I'd be looking at the seizing problem first.
Most pistons that are seized only need a bit more coaxing to get them out and then the cause of the seizing can be scraped and polished away.
On a single piston caliper,I'll leave it hooked to the master cylinder and hanging off the rotor, pump as much fluid as necessary to push the piston out.Your gonna replace all the fluid anyways.
On a dual piston, just stop one just short with piece of wood till they both pop all the way up then wiggle them out.

I tried letting the fluid do the work but it only came out a quarter inch and won't budge any more. I did get a piston out of an old right frt caliper which I will rebuild and try.

More pressure. Some will adapt a grease zerk and use a grease gun to pop it out.been there, done that too.
Clean the white powder from under the seal. It's whats causing the binding. Also, polish the bore and piston till it runs all the way to the bottom of the bore without sticking.
Then clean the return port in each master cylinder. If the calipers are binding up,the masters won't magically be in perfect condition either.
