carb problems

Postby shocko » Thu Apr 05, 2012 12:15 pm

Hi
Glad to be a member ofthis site.
I have a 1980 GLi 1100 wirth carb problems. After reading about asimilar problem on your site and taking the advice given I stripped the carbs down and cleaned them thoroughly. I found that the pump on no 3 carb (the only one with a pump diaphragm)was perforated. Can you please tell me how this could influence the operation of the carbs and what symptoms would I expect to get?
The motor knocks on acceleration and doesn't run smoothly on intermediate throttle. On the right hand side i.e. carb no 1 and no 3 I have a very lean mixture(practically no CO reading). How many turns from zero should the air\fuel adjustment be?
Does anyone know where I can purchase a pump diaphragm?
I heard that there is a DVD available on carburettor reconditioning?
Thanks Guys
Brian

The accelerator pump helps overcome a slightly lean condition on a quick throttle. It will be a bit sluggish if you rap the throttle open when you first start off,the jack rabbit start.
I'd start at 3 turns from closed.a rattling engine can be resolved with syncing the carbs at or near 900 rpm.if you can't borrow a set,a set can be built.search this site for " $25 carb sync".it's my home built tool.it works easier than mercury or mechanical units.
A pump rebuild kit..look up Cycle Max,or under the "vendors"tab.

You can also find the item on E-bay, look under 1980 gl1100 carbs and it will show up. Good luck!
