83 final drive
Hello!
How difficult is it to swap out the final drive of a 83a into a 80 gl1100?just bolt her in and go or are there any modifications?Or is the payoff worth the hassle?Regards,Johnyy

had every year from 75 to 83
Re: 83 final drive
Fairly sure it's straight swap but not much difference. Specs of the gears really don't change much and the change maybe all be in the transmission..some one who really knows should be along soon.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

Re: 83 final drive
80=3.091
83=3.100
not much diferance, but the 75-79=3.400
that might be enough change to be worth it.will it fit? They look the same, but I don't know for sure.

Re: 83 final drive
The 1000 final drive will not swap directly with the 1100 one.scotterichmond wrote:80=3.091

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

Re: 83 final drive
The 80-81 models had ring/pinion teeth count of 34/11, giving a 3.091 ratio.
The 82-83 models had 31/10 teeth, for a 3.100 ratio.
Almost unmeasurable difference from the rpm to mph ratio for these bikes.
The reason for the change was to increase the size of the gear teeth, at the expense of a little more noise.

Re: 83 final drive
The 83 had gears set up for touring the freeways that was one of the main difference

Re: 83 final drive
so a swap would make a slight differece on the rpm.On the freeway, the benefits also seem to be negligable.Thank you all for the input.Regards,Johnyy
