Exhaust removal question

Postby SteveB123 » Wed Apr 11, 2012 1:08 pm

I need to do some exhaust repairs on my new-to-me 82 Interstate, and have the complete exhaust unattached and sitting under the bike.
I'm unsure if I'll ever separate the 30 year old slip joint on the crossover tube, so I'm looking for alternative ways of clearing the exhaust from the bike.

Lift the bike?....or remove the centrestand?

Steve

Without separating the components I don't think you'll be getting a jack underneath the bike in any position to pull it out. If you can get it up in the air (* with help and with straps holding it to your jack*) perhaps pulling the rear wheel will allow you to pull it clear all in one piece.

Well, I was actually thinking about hoisting the bike up from above, so I'll have clearance.
However, that makes me a bit frightful for my garage joists. I'm starting to think centrestand removal is the way to go.

Solved.
Hoist bike up from above, AND remove centrestand. Exhaust off in one piece!

As discussed, I suspended the bike from the garage joists:
Bike suspended
Bike suspended

and here's why:
Exhaust leak at seam
