GL1100 engine swap

Postby jwkittel » Wed Apr 11, 2012 7:06 pm

I just completed an engine swap for my 1981 GL1100. I blew the original engine, hard to believe I know. I checked the serial number(s) for the newly transplanted engine and they indicate that it is an '83 model. The bike bogs in low gears and off the line as well as in 5th gear. Is this due to the engine just being placed in and in need of tuning, or is it due to the gear set in the transmission coupled with the 1981 final drive?

I checked the gaps for the rocker arms. Had a ticking noise, fixed that. Checked the spark plugs, was able to remove them by hand no tools. Replaced all four plugs and seated them properly. Dumped the fuel and put fresh new fuel in. After all this the bike ran just fine; however idle speed climbed to almost three thousand. Adjusted the idle speed to correct this.

Now it is back to bogging off the line and at speed. Know a reason and a solution for this?

Didn't synch the carbs, due to my lack of tools for this and that I removed the carbs to clean them. However the limiter caps on the pilot screws are all missing and there are two that are broken. plenty of patina on the damaged pilot screws to indicate the damage was done a long time ago.

So now I am stuck looking for gaskets/O-rings along with four new pilot screws. Going to try to locate a set of carbs in good order to run the bike while the original set is being rebuilt.
