engine oil takes about 3 1/2 quarts

Postby dph03 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 6:41 pm

You artical, "How to change your engine oil" says it takes about 3 1/2 quarts. When I got there I could not see it. I continued and put the full 4 quarts. I still cannot see the oil. I guess I should drain 1/2 a quart. What do you think? If that's that case, can I drive it a day before I get it drained?

Are you looking through that little tiny window? if so i had the same problem and could never see the level. Just go with whats in the manual (should be on this website) i think it is the 3.5 quarts.

Start up your bike and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the oil through all of the ports in the engine. Then shut it down and check the level. If it's way overfilled, I'd drain a little to get it within spec, you don't want to blow a seal or gasket.

dph03, what did you mean by "when you got there you could not see it"? You couldn't see the oil level? I have the same bike as you. Is the little oil level window dirty or blocked? I check my oil at every gas fill-up, and sometimes a little dirt will stop me from seeing it. It is a pretty small window. Steps 30 and 31 show the window in the following article...viewtopic.php?f=11&t=276
Do you have a dipstick? How do you check your oil. The specs in my manual for your engine oil capacity calls for 3.4 U.S. quarts (3.2 liter). Overfilling can cause as much damage as under filling. There needs to be space inside for the oil to work properly. It will foam up and not lube properly. And if there is too much, you will not be able to see the oil line in the window because it is too high past the window, and it will appear as all yellow, instead of seeing a lighter portion where the oil isn't. Drain about a quart out and see if you can then view the level through the window.

Thanks All,
I did get it over a little. I drained a quart an then add it in smaller increments. I had the same problem not being able to see it last time (old age). Starting it and stirring it up a bit helped.
Great Site!

tricks use a flash light to look at eh window..or shine it into the oil fill port and it may light up the inside enough to shine out the window a bit...OR!!! add a dip stick to the engine..they sell for about $24 new or one on eBay right now.

gl1000's take 3.2 quarts
