Mufflers again!

Postby meantrump2 » Thu Jan 28, 2010 11:37 am

I am a new member and still getting used to the site. Any way, I own a 1980 GL1100 equipped with Vetter tour pack. I have serious exhaust leaks as the mufflers are bad. I have obtained a pair of 09 Road King take off mufflers for a mere 12 pack of St Pauly Girl Beer. My question is this. How and what is required to install these on my wing? the rest of the pipe is good, only the muffs are bad.
Thank you ever so much for any info that you may have to offer.

Hello,

Most people who do that cut the muffler off after it brings the two into 1 pipe. Then they get a flange from an auto parts store to change the pipe diameter to the diameter of the muffler. I've seen a large clamp around the muffler which then bolts onto the frame of the bike and your done. Sometimes they use an extension between the exhaust and the muffler to move the muffler further back. You can look on this site, that is a common thread over there. http://www.ngwclub.com/

Good luck.

Dennis

i cut mine off right where the head pipe ends, right after the weld on the muffler side.swelled the end of a 2 inch pipe from the muffler shop and had him bend the peice i needed to get the mufflers back where they can be mounted closest to the stock location. 2 inch pipe worked well .the muffler shop swelled the inlet end a bit to fit over the head pipe and i welded that end shrunk the muffler inlet end to an inch and three quarter to fit inside the mufflers.i used 1200 sporster mufflers.
