Oil level window

Postby davepetersonhome » Wed Nov 19, 2008 12:56 am

I cannot find the oil inspection window. The manual I downloaded does not show a pic of it, and does not describe it's location? Anybody know where it is? This appears to be the way you determine whether the motor has sufficient oil.

Here, I've taken a picture of mine for you. You have to get down on your knees, on the right side of the bike, and look just below and in front of the rear brake pedal:

Note the tiny flat-blade screw in the middle of the window. Turning this with a small screwdriver turns a wiper on the inside of the window, cleaning it so you can see the oil level accurately.

That dorky little oil window isn't one of Honda's better ideas, in my opinion... I bought one of those aftermarket dipsticks which bolt in place of the oil drain plug at the front of the engine. It's an easy install. Remember to place your bike on the center stand after you install the dipstick and then take an "upper limit" oil reading. I tapped the stick at the upper limit with a screw and hammer to make an indentation so I have an idea of where the the level should be. The dipstick is a much better alternative to the site glass, but be warned... If you take your wing off road (as some of us knuckleheads do), watch for rocks...Went to a rally a few years back and my '81 bottomed out on a rock and snapped the dipstick assembly clean off. I stuffed the hole with some cloth and duct tape, threw in some oil and zoomed on home, but it still sucked. =)

I've got the dipstick assembly on my GL1100 as well. It promotes frequent oil-level-checking, whereas I would be less likely to check the filthy little window. I don't (intentionally) take my wing offroad, so I figure I'm safe from rock damage!

I know this is an old thread but does anyone have a source for an oil level dipstick set-up, looks better than crawling around on the ground.

Thanks, Z

You can get them from JC Whitney for just under $30.
