1980 GL1100i rad cap leak.

Postby palmpalm » Sat Apr 28, 2012 11:28 pm

My 1980 GL1100i has been leaking from the radiator cap for weeks now, when the engine heats up. I changed the overflow hose, I bought a new rad cap, and I took it to my mechanic who tested the rad and couldn't figure out the problem. Eventually they thought the thermostat was malfunction so they took it out and thought it was fixed, but the problem returned. Not sure what else to do, my mechanic suggested it could be the head gaskets but said he wasn't certain as there were no other signs of head gasket failure (no bubbles/air in the rad, no white smoke, no oil/coolant mixing, etc., etc.). Eventually, he said he didn't know what to do and I didn't want to do the head gaskets if we didn't know it was necessary and he told me I should bring it to an expert on old Goldwings.

There is already a thread about it here: http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/for ... 098-1.html

I just don't know what to do now. Any advice is appreciated.

Is it leaking from the cap or from somewhere else? If it is from the cap area and installing a new cap didn't fix it then you could have a problem where the cap seats on the neck or a crack in the neck. I've worked on cars and found the radiator fill neck had a crack around the base. You might have to clean and dry all the coolant off and run the bike until it heats up and search for the leak with a bright light and inspection mirror. Sometimes doing a pressure test won't find some small cracks. Some won't show themselves until the cracked area expands from the heat of the coolant

Thanks! To my amazement, I've been riding all day and no leak. Could I be this lucky?

Could be that the cap didn't seat properly at first. I would keep an eye on it until you know the problem is gone.

It is back to leaking :( I have tried everything I can think of, even used some of that radiator stop leak stuff but it did not help. I give up. I need a mechanic to fix this for me and don't know who to go to. Is there anyone here that can recommend a mechanic in or near the Toronto, Ontario area?

Can you figure out where it is leaking from? Is it from the cap, radiator or hoses? Overflow tank?

the leak is from the cap itself.

From reading thru the other posts and looking at the pics, It looks like a sealing issue at the cap. It could be the mating surface of the neck not being true or square. The lip on the underside could be misaligned. The tabs on the cap could be bent. OR, you have an issue of the cooling system over-pressurizing/over-heating. Reading the many posts on this I have seen all that has been tested or replaced, but no mention about the water pump. Has that been tested to see if it is working? I think the other posts mentioned the temp gauge on the bike is not working? If so, need to get that fixed so we can see the bikes operating temp. When the false tank is off and you are watching inside the radiator at the cap (with cap removed) is there any flow thru the radiator? Once the bike is up to operating temps and the thermostat opens, there should be some flow thru the radiator. I'd be curious what the temp of the radiator is at different points when it's leaking, using an infrared thermometer like the one at HF.
