1983 1100i ticking from right side NOT the lifters

Postby Rod1smith » Mon Apr 30, 2012 10:19 pm

It starts at 3500 rpm but the motor runs smooth. Checked the lifters all good there. Plenty of power the carbs are a little out of sync.ONLY 47500 miles It isnt always the same sometimes its loouder than others and usually doesnt really get loud till it has been running for a while . Fresh oil and filter not filing's in the oil. Ive heard the exhaust gaskets can be loud. Haven't changed them yet. Figured id wait for some advise from the guys who have worked on these for a while..

It could be the fuel pump, mounted on the back side of the cams. Use a mechanic's stethoscope to see if that's where the noise is coming from.

Really the fuel pump that would explain things. Does that mean its going or can it be adjusted?

It's interesting you mention this.My 83 had a annoying ticking on the same side.
Well I found it.....I had put on a chrome cover over the fuel pump.
It was a add on and it covered up the fuel pump and looked nice.
It bolted on using the 2 manifold bolts and was shaped like a dome.
It also rang like a bell.It actually picked up the normal valve ticking and just like a bell, amplified it.
I removed it and tossed it into a box.
It also resonated between 2500-3500 rpm.
Drove me nuts.I actually replaced the cam and rockers before I figured it out.

Sir your are correct, a leak in the exhaust gasket will make a ticking sound, like Virgil it drove me nut's I could figure out what the heck and where it was coming from, the silly gasket is what it was, I replaced all of them..That's good to know that the fuel pump can make a noise and the fuel pump cover will amplify noise.. :D
