81 to 79 engine swap? Hard hard is it to do?

Postby powerdrill9 » Tue May 01, 2012 8:12 pm

I have a 81 GL1100 interstate that is seized up, and I bought a 79 GL1000 parts bike because it was running when parked, and isnt seized up. After searching the site I have learned that they are quite different. I know you can put a 1100 final drive in a 1000, so can you put a 1000 engine into a 1100 fame and make it work? Please say yes so I didn't drive 350 miles and buy a bike that doesn't help me.

Yes you can..should slip right in..your issues will be electrical stuff..wiring is totally different..points, condenser, regulator, resistor setups.

So I should just change the wiring harness over, to the GL1100 then. That shouldn't be much of a problem there. I am going to check everything I can while the motor is out. It has a pretty good oil leak for one, and check stator, and clutch. What else should I check? Thanks for the help.

Water pump should be tight no wiggle side to side, change the timing belts, remove and clean off the neutral switch, replace the shift arm seal..maybe the cam and crank seals..while changing ht belts look for ANY oil in there.
