adding a rechargeable battery to gl110 system

Postby dadw5boys » Thu May 03, 2012 8:51 am

I dropped and busted the casing of a portable battery pack and now I am thinking of installing that battery in my hard case next to the GL1100 battery. If I install it fully charged the battery and electrical system should not be effected. I am worndering if the added amps avaible would cause a problems with the regulator or anything else.

It depends on the size of the battery, its level of discharge, and so on. What type of battery is it? What are you looking to do with it?

the label reads
MF12V-18AH
Constant Voltage Charge
Voltage Regulation
cycle use:14.4`15v(25*c)
inital curent:less than 6 volts
standby use: 13.6 `13.8 v

It is low amp. I am thinking of taking a long ride over a couple of states and I just don't want to have battery problems. I have 1980 1100 with only 36k mile on the bike.

I don't know that I would just hook it up in parallel with your existing battery. The two batteries are going to charge at different rates. If you had a secondary charge controller (like used for a trailer) you could use that. However, if it is severely discharged, it along with the main battery (after a start discharge) could easily overwhelm the charging system of your bike.
